Participating artists: Sarah E. Brook, Rachel Frank, Ruth Jeyaveeran, and Jemila MacEwan

Transcending Taxonomy, our inaugural outdoor exhibition, invites visitors to experience installations by Sarah E. Brook, Rachel Frank, and Ruth Jeyaveeran as well as a performance by Jemila MacEwan. The exhibition explores the intersections of flora and fauna with the elements, effectively fusing them in ways that transcend the confines of singular classification.

Through artworks that merge trees with wool, clay with the landscape, and water with wood, these artists soften the boundaries between animal, vegetable, and mineral. Brook carefully places and layers found architectural elements in natural settings, doubling their height with reflections in the bodies of water they occupy. Frank’s Chrysalids are ceramic hybrids of plants and animals that sometimes fuse with the human body while Jeyaveeran’s wool sculptures hang from trees and envelop stones with handmade felt. MacEwan physically embodies another species in their performance as The Raven (Corvid Clown). Each of these artists challenges the notion of “nature” as separate from people, reminding us of the intertwined destinies of humanity and everything else on earth.
